Microplastics meaning: They’re tiny bits of plastic (smaller than 5mm) that break down from larger items like bottles or bags. Even though they’re small, they’re a big problem, causing water pollution, harming marine life, and sneaking into the food we eat.

In early September, something special happened on the shores of Kommetjie. The Wave 100 beach clean-up brought together more than 150 people - local families, surfers, and passionate volunteers - all with one mission: to protect our coastline. One thing that stood out during the clean-up was just how many microplastics we found in the sand.
It was a wake-up call that while plastic pollution is a huge challenge, it’s also something we can tackle together, through awareness and action.
The turnout was incredible, and the energy was infectious! It’s a reminder that when communities come together, every small action adds up to meaningful change and contributes to a more happy, healthy environment.
For us, sharing kombucha at events like this is a way to celebrate people coming together for a healthy environment.

Local Action, Global Impact
Beach clean-ups might feel like small steps, but they connect directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
-
- Clean Water (SDG 6)
- Sustainable Cities & Communities (SDG 11)
- Life Below Water (SDG 14)
By removing plastic, reducing environmental pollution, and supporting the ocean, we’re all contributing to global progress while making our own coastline a little brighter.
Simple Solutions We Can All Try
Protecting the environment isn’t about being perfect; it’s about trying, learning, and doing it together. Here are a few easy steps:
-
- Join your local community clean-up, and bring a sieve!
- Carry a reusable coffee cup and bag instead of single-use plastic.
- Dispose of waste responsibly - every bin choice counts.
- Support eco-conscious businesses and policies.
- Talk to friends about environmental problems and solutions - awareness spreads fast.
These little actions add up, especially when a whole community gets involved.
A Ripple of Positivity
A massive shoutout to the organisers and other sponsors - Kom Surf & Ocean Pledge - for making the day possible. Their effort created space for people to connect, act, and have fun while protecting our beaches.
Every piece of plastic collected, every smile shared, and every sip of kombucha enjoyed was a reminder that positive change is possible. When we act as a community, we don’t just fight environmental pollution - we build a future with cleaner beaches, healthier oceans, and happier people. And that’s something worth celebrating 🌊✨
